This year AWARE CT is partnered with The Cancer Couch Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness and funds for metastatic breast cancer (Stage 4). The harsh reality is that there is no cure for Stage 4, and that there is a significant lack of funding allocated for metastatic breast cancer research. Our mission is to raise funds for a cure, and to start a dialogue within our community about how breast cancer has impacted all of our lives.

AWARE CT Creates Girls Club for Refugee Teens that Built Confidence and Provided Important Life Skills
Bridgeport, CT – May 30, 2019 – Citing their strong and effective commitment to the advancement of some of the most vulnerable young women in the state, the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) has named Fairfield County’s AWARE CT as Volunteer Group Partner of the Year.
CIRI, the only statewide nonprofit that serves refugees, immigrants, survivors of torture, survivors of human trafficking, and asylum-seekers, made the announcement at its recent Volunteer Appreciation event, honoring the 670 volunteers, mentors, and interns who have helped CIRI fulfill its mission over the past year.
AWARE (Assisting Women through Action, Resources & Education) is a grass-roots organization dedicated to promoting awareness and generating funds in order to make meaningful improvements in the lives of women and girls in the New York City, Fairfield County and worldwide communities. The goal is to partner with one organization on a yearly cycle and support the program’s mission via a three-pillar approach, including volunteer, financial, and education support.
Last year AWARE CT worked closely with CIRI staff and clients to identify what refugee girls and young women wanted and then, based on that input, created the Girls’ Club. The Girls’ Club has met monthly for a year, providing a range of new experiences, life skills, enrichment activities and delicious healthy meals and snacks. Girls’ Club provides a unique opportunity for the girls and young women to come together in a safe space with compassionate community members.
CIRI CEO Claudia Connor said, “We are so grateful to the women of AWARE CT, who have made a real difference in the lives of our young refugees. CIRI’s collaboration with AWARE catalyzed the creation of the Girls’ Club, which has blossomed into a community of support and personal enrichment for refugee girls and young women. With AWARE’s support, the Girls’ Club members have gained confidence, acquired important life skills and engaged in creative and rewarding activities with one another. AWARE has strengthened and inspired these young women equipping them with new ideas and confidence for their futures in America.
AWARE CT Director of Operations Nicole Gerber said, “This year’s partnership with CIRI has been a transformational experience for AWARE CT. Being a part of the creation of a new and successful program with CIRI, and to witness how it has improved the lives of the girls we are supporting, has exceeded our every hope and expectation. An indelible mark has been made in the hearts and minds of the AWARE CT volunteers who were a part of this year’s program.”
